STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION OF PARENTAL BACKGROUND AND PEER INFLUENCE ON CYBERCRIME AMONG ADOLESCENT IN BENIN CITY

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to examine students’ perception of parental background and peer influence on cybercrime among adolescent in Benin City. To guide the study, four research questions were raised which are outlined thus: What is the influence of adolescents’ involvement in cybercrime in Benin City? What is the different between the involvement of adolescent in cybercrime in Benin City by age? Does family background influence adolescents’ involvement in cybercrime in Benin City? Does peer pressure influence adolescents’ involvement in cybercrime? The descriptive research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised nine and forty (940) full time students of the Department of Educational Evaluation and Counselling Psychology Faculty of Education University of Benin, Source Exame and Record. The sample of the study consist of 400 levels students of Evaluation and Counselling Psychology, Faculty of education University of Benin, Benin City. A proportionate sampling technique was adopted whereby 100 students in the various course area was used to select the final sample. The major findings of the study revealed that the adolescents’ involvement in cybercrime in Benin City is low. This implies that age is a factor in their level of involvement in cybercrime in Benin City those in age 17 years and above are more into cybercrime. This implies that the respondents are of the view that family background influence adolescents’ involvement in cybercrime among students in University of Benin. Also, peer pressure influence adolescents’ involvement in cybercrime in students in University of Benin.
