STUDENTS’ CAMPUS POLITICS AND ACADEMIC COMMITMENT

ABSTRACT

The summary for the study is presented in this section, conclusion reached with recommendation made as regards students’ campus politics an academic commitment in Benin City. Five research objectives and research questions were raised for the study. The study adopted the descriptive research survey design and a population of 100 respondents was used to sample respondents’ opinion, while the descriptive statistics such as mean and standard deviation was used for the analysis. The following is a summary of the findings from the empirical analysis of the study: University undergraduate students seldomly participate in campus politics in university of Benin. Hence, student consider politics as not important and so do not participate in it. There is no significant relationship between participation in campus politics and academic Commitment. Hence, students see campus politics as a distraction to their academic commitment. Age is a fundamental factor that influences students’ participation in campus politics. Hence, students who are older students are considered to be more qualified for political offices in school. Gender is a significant factor that influences students’ participation in campus politics. Hence, certain offices are considered to be associated with gender. There are several factors that engenders students’ involvement in campus politics such as gender, political affiliation, family socio-economic status, course of study, and fear of academic.
