STUDENTS’ ATTITUDE AND STUDY HABITS AS CORRELATES TO ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS IN PUBLIC SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OVIA NORTH EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA IN EDO STATE, NIGERIA.

Abstract

This work takes a look at the students attitude and study habits as correlated to academic achievement in public senior secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area in Edo State .The objective of the study is to examine the effect of students attitude and study habit towards learning and how it aid their academic performance most  especially in core subjects like English, Mathematics, Civic Education and Religious studies as a subject thought in public  senior secondary schools, to investigate the impact of learning resources or facility on students’ academic achievement also to examine the factors influencing the academic performance and study habits of students in public senior secondary schools and to proffer solution based on the findings. The population of the study is two thousand seven hundred and sixty (2760), students of public senior secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo state and random sampling technique was used to select hundred (100) students from the entire population.’  The data collected was analyzed using Chi square statistic. The result showed that, there is significant relationship between students’ attitude and study habits as correlated to academic achievement in public senior secondary schools. To this end the researcher recommends that, parent should always encourage student to study while at home, schools and concern bodies should do good to provide updated learning resources also to employ competent teachers in to the educational system.
