Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine students’ perception on examination malpractice in the University of Benin. Four (4) research questions were raised for the study.
The descriptive survey research design was used for the study. The population of the study consisted of all the students of University of Benin, Benin City and one hundred (100) students selected from five faculties. Questionnaire titled “students’ perception of the cause and implication of examination malpractice in University of Benin” was used to collect data for the study. The data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation.
From the analyzed data, it was found that the respondents perceive examination malpractice is wrong. Based on the findings, some factors that influence student to engage in examination malpractice include; poor study habits, fear of disappointing one’s parents, friends and emphasis of certification in the society. According to findings discouragement of students from studying hard, denial of admission to deserving students were some implications of examination malpractice. Based on findings, it was recommended that sound educational policy should be put in place with de-emphasis on the supremacy of certificates over skills and professional competence, the university should guide against indiscriminate admission of students so as not to overstretch the available facilities, guidance and counseling services should be adopted in the university so as to reduce cases of examination malpractice and the administration and conduct of examination should be entrusted to the care of men and women of proven integrity in the university.
