ABSTRACT
The work discussed the properties of verbs and verb phrase in Esan. The project was motivated by the need to account for the internal syntactic and semantic structure of verbal words in Esan, and the features of the verbs with regards to their organization. The data on the verbs employed for analysis in the study were collected primarily from personal communication with some native speakers of the language from Igueben LGA of Edo State, while others were drawn from Roelle and Ejelle’s works on aspects of the orthography and dictionary of Esan language. The method of analysis employed was the Government and Binding theory of Chomsky (1981). The study showed that verbs constitute an important unit in the grammar of Esan language and that it is morphologically, syntactically and semantically conditioned. It shows that the structure of verbs is a very flexible one and its easily influenced by its’ co-occurring entity, hence the syntactic configuration by means of the x-bar model of analysis to show the flexibility of the verbs in their actual usage by native speakers.
