ABSTRACT
Poverty alleviation isaccompanied by a number of positive social impacts. These include improved access to food (that results in higher nutritional and health levels), improved access to education) due to higher income levels and ability to pay for fees and supplies), and improved employment opportunities.
The objectives of the study are to examine the impact of security political stability of selected local government on poverty alleviation, to assess selected local government poverty alleviation strategies capacity for reducing poverty and so on.
The survey approach and the case study approach were the two basic approaches open to this study. The study area was Edo state in Nigeria. The targeted population includes all citizens and agencies charged with poverty reduction strategies in the selected local governments in Edo State. The simple random sampling technique was used to select samples for the study. The study size was Two hundred and thirty respondents. Data collection was effected through secondary and primary sources. The present study utilized both primary and secondary sources of data using questionnaires as the main instrument and structured interviews. The Chi-Square (X2) was used for the statistical analysis of data collected. The research findings clearly portray that, there is high incidence of poverty in Nigeria; the target objective of poverty reduction strategies “to eradicate poverty” is an ambitious one that may remain unattainable. The study concluded that the poverty reduction institutions of the government should be seen as an integral part of agencies responsible for the realization of good governance and provision of basic social amenities, especially enhancing security and providing means of cushioning vulnerability of the citizens to external and mostly uncontrollable events such as violence, economic shocks, natural disasters, etc. the study thus recommended amongst others that Government and its agencies should develop a multi-dimensional approach to poverty reduction strategies and implement along that line.
