ABSTRACT

The study was carried out to investigate the Strategies for improving maintenance of laboratories and equipment of Vocational and Technical Education for effective service delivery in tertiary institutions (A case study of University of Benin). The design of the study was descriptive while the population comprised all 400 level Industrial and Technical Education and Home Economics Education Students in University of Benin which made a total of 76 respondents. The entire population was studied. Four research question guided the study. A 20-item questionnaire was used to obtain information from the respondents. Based on the data collected and analyzed, the following results were obtained that there are main challenges and shortcomings in the maintenance of Laboratories and Equipment within Vocational and Technical Education programmes in Tertiary Institutions. The findings also revealed that Inadequate maintenance of Laboratories and Equipment affect service delivery, educational outcomes, and student learning experiences in Vocational and Technical Education. It also revealed that it is important to identify and adopt best practices and succesful maintenance strategies employed in similar Educational contexts or industries. Based on the above it was recommended that Government through the ministry of Education should allocated a dedicated budget for the maintenance of laboratories and equipment replacement to ensure adequate funding and Institutions should develop a comprehensive maintenance plan that addresses the identified challenges and shortcomings. The establishment of maintenance culture that encourages staff and students to take ownership of maintenance activities. Also institutions should research and adopt best practices and successful maintenance strategies from similar Educational contexts or industries.
