ABSTRACT
Language has been the fulcrum for all human interactions from time and the early age learners as future
generation cannot grow in exception hence, improving on appropriate means to communicate using the
skills acquired for advancement becomes a necessity, the process of communication is complex and
cannot be achieved without the help of very informed and knowledgeable adults. Three research
questions were raised to guide the study. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The study
was conducted in Federal College of Education (Technical) Ekiadolor, Benin City – Edo State. The
population for the study was 30 respondents consisting of 25 Student Teachers and 5 lecturers of Early
Childhood Care and Education Department. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 25 student
teachers and 5 lecturers. A structured questionnaire was raised to solicit data from the respondents.
Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions which found that, poor
funding, lack of training and laissez – faire attitudes among others are problems of improving children
communication skills. These crop of learners are ignored by both parents and schools, leaving them to
fate and as a result, foul language and other corruptible communication patterns, crept into families and
schools especially the campus, leading to the emergence of inappropriate interactions and all other forms
of anti – social behaviors in the society. Against the backdrop, this study examines proponents of
language development, the role of adults in promoting language development in early age children,
benefits of communication skills, and strategies for enhancing language development in early age
children, were all considered with very valuable recommendations.
