ABSTRACT
The objective of this study is to examine the common stereotypes seen in the Nigerian film industry Nollywood. It focuses on analyzing the gender, religious, and socio-cultural stereotypes expressed in specific Nollywood films. By examining these stereotypes, the study aims to identify the frequency with which it manifests in and pervades Nollywood productions.
This study uses a qualitative approach, with ten popular Nollywood movies such as Glamor Girls, Desperate Housegirls, King of Boys, Chief Daddy, Sugar Rush, End of the Wicked, Karishika, Living in Bondage: Breaking Includes analysis of Free, Blood Money and Arusi –iyi. The theoretical framework utilized is the archetypal theory, providing a lens to reveal the underlying cultural symbols, myths, and ideas embedded in these cinematic images
The findings revealed highly penetrating gender stereotypes that often portrayed women as dependent and passive, as well as misrepresented religious and cultural customs, which are often expressed as voodoo or occult practices. These stereotypes have far-reaching effects on how gender roles, spiritual beliefs, and cultural heritage are portrayed, both domestically and internationally.
The study shows that these stereotypes may be a mirror to the existing beliefs, values, and power relationships within the Nigerian society as well as the creative decisions and biases of the filmmakers.
Futhermore, the application of archetypal theory in this study also provides a sophisticated model for the examination of the symbolic and psychological subtext of the stereotypes. Through the acknowledgement of the archetypal nature of these representations, the research becomes a part of a more comprehensive exploration of cultural meanings and the common mythological structures that underlie the narrative films of Nollywood.
In conclusion, this study is a reminder that the Nigerian film industry, as well as the academic and cultural community, should reflect critically on the stereotypes pervasive in Nollywood and work towards a more accurate and unbiased representation of Nigerian society. Through the elimination of stereotypes and the encouragement of the cultural authenticity in cinema, the Nigerian movie industry has the potential of contributing in shaping the true and defined image of Nigeria both locally and globally.
