ABSTRACT
The quality of life, economic productivity, and environmental sustainability of cities are all strongly impacted by traffic congestion, which is a widespread problem in urban areas all over the world. Over time, traffic congestion on Dawson Road in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria has gotten worse, creating difficulties for both commuters and the local government. This study uses a thorough spot speed analysis method to assess and treat Dawson Road's traffic congestion. In order to evaluate the current traffic circumstances, the research used a multidisciplinary strategy that integrated data gathering, analysis, and urban planning techniques. The method employed in this study was the stop watch method and a distance of 50m was used to obtain the relative speed of the vehicles moving at that particular spot. Three observers were present on the road with one person on both ends of the road with white flags to indicate the start as the vehicle pass the desired spot and exit it. The third person in the middle to record the time of travel. The results showed that excessive traffic volumes, poor road infrastructure, frequent road maintenance, and a lack of efficient traffic management strategies were the main causes of congestion. The 50 th percentile (median speed) gotten from this study was 35.5km/h and is a critical metric as it offers a central point of reference for understanding the typical behaviour of vehicles on Dawson road. The 15 th percentile (minimum speed) was 23km/h which implies that 15% of the observed vehicles were travelling at or below this speed, reflecting the presence of slower moving vehicles in the area. The 85 th percentile( percentile for determining the speed limit on any road) was 59km/h and the 95 th percentile (design speed was 68km/h, this implies that a very small fraction (2%) of vehicles were travelling at higher speeds, possibly indicating outliers or drivers who exceed the norm. This thorough technique to spot speed measurement provides helpful information for evaluating and reducing traffic congestion on Dawson Road in Benin City. The data aids in optimizing transportation systems between speed and road safety, and ultimately contributing to the efficient and safe operation of road ways.
