ABSTRACT
This project investigates the Sociolinguistics function of speaking model analysis of swear words in Edo language. Swear words hold a unique place in human communication. It is undeniable that in most cultures swearing has been regarded as offensive but in Edo language, these words transcend mere offensiveness. This project delves into the world the world of Edo swear words, not through simple listing but through the lens of a speaking model. This work aim to describe the different abusive terms employed by the Edo people in different situations, determining the social communicative use of swear words and to determine if there is a relationship between the use of swear words and behavior of the individual involved. This research employ data obtained from the direct observation of native speakers of the language through interviews of selected elderly Edo speakers and from literatures ranging from textbooks, journals, as well as magazines of swear words and other expressions in Edo and other related languages. The theoretical framework used in this study is the SPEAKING MODEL by Hymes (1974). This research shows that swear words are often used to express strong emotions such as anger, frustration, pain, or excitement. In moments of intense emotional arousal, people may turn to swear words as a way to release pent-up feelings and convey the intensity of their emotions.
