ABSTRACT
Individual perception of sound as noise is dependent on a number of variables, some of which are influenced by the noise's qualities and others by the recipient's physiological makeup. The study examined ambient noise levels of 20 randomly selected locations in Egor Local Government Area, Edo State. The sampled areas were selected with the aid of ARC GIS software version 10.8 and the noise levels at each point was determined using a digital sound level meter. The sampling points were visited once monthly in the months of June and July 2023. Spatial maps were developed for the sampled locations utilizing the inverse distance weighting (IDW) interpolation technique available in ARC GIS 10.8 software. The mean values of the noise readings were determined using Microsoft Excel 2016 version. The mean noise values ranged from 44.9dB to 72.8dB in June and from 44.9dB to 72.8dB for locations visited in July, 2023. The results obtained showed that the mean noise levels were within safe limits although the maximum mean noise levels recorded may pose a threat to anthropogenic auditory health. The noise maps revealed that maximal noise levels were concentrated at the northern and southern ends of the sampled area indicating that health risks due to noise would be highest at these places. Noise control measures are recommended at these locations to protect human health.
