SUMMARY
The study was conducted to identify and compare the various physical and chemical properties of soils under young oil palm plantation at the Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR), Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. One of the major constraints to oil palm plantation is the fertility of the soil and soil nutrient distribution in NIFOR. The study investigates the key issues of soil chemical properties for sustainable agricultural development in NIFOR, Edo State. Soil samples were collected using stratified sampling methods from the surface layer (0-30cm) and subsoil (30-60cm) at various sampling sites. The soil samples were air dried and the sieved samples were analyzed for chemical properties and texture using standard laboratory procedures.
