ABSTRACT
This research focuses on exploring code mixing and code switching patterns among University of Benin (UNIBEN) students in the linguistically diverse urban setting of Benin, Nigeria. It aims to understand how factors like age, status, and societal bilingualism influence language variation in social contexts. The study aims to uncover the reasons behind code mixing and code switching by analyzing the linguistic behaviors of individuals who are exposed to diverse linguistic varieties. To gather data, the research employs qualitative methods, using audio recordings of conversations among UNIBEN undergraduates. These recordings, collected using smartphones, capture natural language use and instances of code mixing and code switching. The data will then be subjected to qualitative analysis to identify trends and patterns. In conclusion, this research aims to delve into code mixing and code switching patterns among UNIBEN students, considering sociolinguistic factors. By studying linguistic behaviors, conducting qualitative analysis, and focusing on specific faculties, the research aims to provide insights into the types, functions, and impacts of code mixing and code switching within this multicultural academic environment.
