ABSTRACT
Benin, one of the most remarkable of the states of the Guinea forest, was the centre of an empire the size and orderliness of which attracted the attention of the Portuguese who visited the Guinea coast towards the end of the fifteenth century. This study of Benin under the Warrior Kings from 1440-1606 has been concerned with the role and place of the warrior kings in the development of Benin kingdom. The warrior kings of Benin was an adequate force which the kingdom had its command, the capabilities that transformed the kingdom from a small state in the early fifteen century into an empire. In the different phases of the history of Benin from 1440 -1606, there were records of change in the political and social organization. During the reign of Oba Ewaure the great, the political, among other reforms which he introduced transformed the character of Benin kingdom.
