ABSTRACT
The Benin City Airport has not been widely recognized as having a considerable socio-economic development impact on the city as a whole and on its surrounding environs. An airport is expected to provide essential infrastructure to support the city and the surrounding environs for social and economic growth as well as being commercial entities in their own right capable of generating returns on investment to the benefit of the society as a whole. Also airport exert significant economic impacts on their surrounding area, supporting employment, generating prosperity and providing economic stability. But this is not visible in the case of the presence of the Benin City airport. This research study looked at the socio-economic development impact of Benin City airport on its environs and information were gathered directly from the residents of the Benin City airport and the surrounding environs by questionnaires and through recent research conformation on socio-economic development impact prepared for various airports around the globe. The issues surrounding airport socioeconomic development impact on its environs need to be defined by an understanding the complex roles and spatial interaction associated with an airport. However, it is very clear that the scale of passengers and freight activity at Benin City airport has decreased significantly in recent years and this trend is likely to continue due to establishment of other airports close to the Benin City airport. The research adopts an interface model for understanding the development impact of airport. Interface areas include land use, infrastructure, economic and governance. This study also analysed statistically the social economic development impact of Benin City airport on its environs.
