ABSTRACT

The study examined the socio-economic determinant of domestic Violence among Married Couples in Egor Local Government Area, Benin City, Edo State. The objective of the study was to examine whether economic factors leads to domestic violence  against women in Egor Local Government Area; to examine the influence of income on domestic violence among couples in Egor Local Government Area; to know if educational attainment and economic conditions leads to domestic violence  against women in Egor Local Government Area; to  investigate whether domestic violence against women is prevalent in Egor Local government area and to examine social work implications of domestic violence against women in Egor Local Government Area. The cross sectional research design was adopted for this study. 384 copies of questionnaire were distributed to respondents in Egor local government areas in Edo state. Data collected were analyzed using frequency count, percentages, and mean with the aid of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 24.0. The empirical result revealed that revealed that economic and social status predicted domestic violence among couples in Nigeria as homes with poverty tend to elicit domestic violence towards1each other than the rich homes.  The study recommend that government and non-governmental organization should endeavor to implement or boost effective poverty alleviation programs that will alleviate poverty in our society; and that the government should impose punishment on offending spouse to serve as deterrence to others also, provide intervention centers where disputes between couples can be settled to achieve a domestic violent free society.
