ABSTRACT

Dressing is a way of expressing one’s identity, status, and power. It is not only about fashion and aesthetics, but also about the cultural and historical context in which it is worn. This study hence is an attempt to carry out a cultural  studies theory on a sociocultural analysis of Benin dressing codes. The aim of the research is to provide a comprehensive and detailed understanding of the sociocultural significance of Benin dressing codes. The data for this study was collected using a combination of methods, including fieldwork, interviews and archival research. The method used in carrying out this research was both primary and secondary. The cultural studies theory framework was employed for the analysis of the data. The analysis of the data reveals how clothing serves as a tangible expression of complex sociocultural dynamics within the Benin Kingdom, reflecting economic, social, cultural, and political factors while also symbolizing status, tradition, and allegiance to the royal family. The study concludes by underscoring the enduring significance of Benin dressing codes as a reflection of cultural identity, social status, and tradition, while also acknowledging their ability to evolve and adapt to contemporary contexts.
