ABSTRACT
The study examined social work intervention strategies for students suffering depression in the University of Benin. The objective of the study was to examine social work intervention strategies for students suffering depression in the university of Benin; Know the prevalence and the level of depression among undergraduates in the University of Benin; Investigate the causes of depression among undergraduates students in the University of Benin and to evaluate the effect of depression among undergraduates students in the University of Benin.
The cross sectional research design was adopted for this study. 221 copies of questionnaire were distributed to 221 respondents in the University of Benin, Benin City. Data collected were analyzed using frequency count, percentages and mean, with the aid of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 24.0.
The empirical result revealed revealed that that social welfare practice is active in Nigeria and that there have been record of success of social workers in helping to curb depression and that depression is common among undergraduates of universities in Nigeria; that depression has been identified as a major factor leading to poor academic performance among university students. The study recommends that social work profession should be empowered in Nigeria, whereby they have access to resources needed to carry out their duties, to address the needs of individuals, families and groups, advocating for people suffering from depression and that counseling centers on university campuses need to be very proactive, easily approachable to all students.
