ABSTRACT
Over the years studies conducted in Nigeria have shown that handicapped persons suffer so many challenges ranging from deprivation of welfare services, inferiority complex as well as limitations in the degree of participation in the normal life of the society. This study examined the social welfare services of handicapped persons using Asaba, Delta state as a case study. The main objective seek to examine the role played by the government and other organisations for the progress and a better society for the handicapped persons in Asaba, Delta State and investigate the influence of pattern on social welfare services offered by the government to handicapped persons.Random sampling technique using the standard formula was employed in selecting the sample. A structured closed ended questionnaire and an in-depth interview schedule were used as instrument for data collection. Collected data were analysed using simple frequency counts and percentages. The findings revealed that social marginalisation, lack of vocational trainings, inadequate health care services among others are factors that constitute problems to the Handicapped persons. Based on the findings it was recommended that the government should establish and mobilize special agencies or institutions that will effectively carry out the duty of rendering these welfare services to handicapped persons in the society and also vocational training programmes and schemes should be provided for handicapped persons.
