SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHERS’ PERCEPTION ON THE USE OF COMMUNITY RESOURCES IN TEACHING LEARNING OF SOCIAL STUDIES IN JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL IN OVIA NORTH EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

The study examined Social Studies teachers’ perception on the use of community resources in teaching learning of Social Studies in public and private junior secondary school in Ovia North East and Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. A descriptive research design which involves collection of data through the use of questionnaire was adopted to solicit information. Three research questions were used to guide the study. The population of the study consisted of all teachers in public junior secondary schools in Ovia North East and Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. The sample of the study comprised of sixty (60) teachers. Frequency count and percentages were used to analyze the data collected to answer the research questions. Based on the analysis of the data, the findings revealed that:the use of community resources improve students learning of Social Studies content in Junior Secondary School, community resources will enhance students’ future involvement in social and political issue, the use of community resources helps to improve teachers’ instructional performance in Junior Secondary School classroom, It was also revealed that the level of teachers’ usage of community resources is low as result of some constraints such as the time consumption, transportation, the distance between the community resource and school, getting parent approval, shortage of funds and that community resources can mostly be used by experienced and teachers with higher qualification. The following recommendations among others were made based on findings of this study: Social Studies teachers should try as much as possible to integrate the use of community resources in teaching Social Studies contents. This will improve the quality of instruction given in schools and also ensure the use of student centered approach in teaching. School authority particularly school administration should encourage teachers to use community resources through financial support, appropriate scheduling of standard timetable and organisation of regular student development programme to promote teacher’s efficiency. Ministry of education through inspectorate division should continually organize seminars and workshops for in servicing Social Studies teachers on importance and professional use of wide variety of community resources to facilitate teaching and learning.
