ABSTRACT

The number of students experiencing symptoms of depression seems to be on the increase in Nigeria despite the devastating effects. This study explored the association of exposure to social media and how social media have helped in curtailing depression among students of University of Benin, Nigeria. The study was a  survey research. A sample of 342 were selected using simple random sampling technique from the 5 departments in Ekehuan campus from a population of 2350. A self designed questionnaire was used to collect data. Data were analysed using frequency and percentage to find out the level of usage of social media in the handling of depression. The results show that there was evidence of depressive symptoms and even depression among students. Exposure to social media was not  related to the development of depression but a solution and mental boost among youths. It was recommended that public and private agencies should harness the potential of social media in curbing depression among others.
