ABSTRACT
The findings from this study add an important contribution to the literature as it represents one of the few studies to examine the utilisation of social media in curbing police excesses and brutality on the Nigerian citizen. Although the sample was limited solely to the Nigerian context, other countries may have different ways their law enforcement agencies engage in citizen brutality and the adoption of social media in curbing such excesses. Therefore, through our exploratory study, we have raised more questions than we have answered, and we hope that future research will provide answers to the questions raised in this study. Specifically, public perceptions of police excesses using social media as an example. Though Social media has some negative impacts on young ones and the society, however, findings have shown that it still has numerous positive impacts. One of such positive impacts was how it really helped in exposing police brutality and also served as means of curbing their excesses through social media oversight in Nigeria. Youths also used the Social Networking Sites to express their needs and grievances as they campaigned against the Brutality, Torture and Abuses they face from the police. Social media is not only used for chatting, watching Movies or catching cruise; it can also be used for communication with the government and the world at large, which the Nigerian youth did during their campaign against Police Brutality.
