ABSTRACT

This study investigates the influence of social media on the reading ability of undergraduate students at Wellspring University. With the increasing popularity and accessibility of social media platforms, concerns have emerged regarding their potential effects on academic skills, particularly reading proficiency. To give the study clear cut focus, four specific objectives namely; to find out the types of social media sites commonly used by students of Wellspring, to examine the frequency of using social media by undergraduates of Wellspring University, to investigate the most common benefit derived from social media by students of wellspring university, to find out the influence of social media on the reading ability of students of Wellspring University. The social cognitive and uses and gratifications theories were used to explain the study while the stratified sampling technique and online survey method was used to execute the study. Using the population study which was 808, the Taro Yamane formula was used to arrive at a sample size of 268. The online questionnaire was the research instrument used for collection of data. Data gathered was presented using tables and frequency was used to analyse the data. The study discovered that social media does not cause any negative influence on the reading ability of undergraduate students of Wellspring University rather it promotes their reading ability giving them an edge over other students.
