ABSTRACT
The researcher examined the influence of social media portrayal of beauty on the perception and attitude of female university students of the University of Benin. The main objectives were to find out the level of exposure of female students to social media contents that portray beauty standard, the level of influence social media platforms have on female students' perception and attitude towards beauty standard and the level of desire of female students to attain beauty in line with the acceptable standard set by social media platforms. The researcher adopted the survey research design, and well-constructed and structured questionnaire as instrument for the study, with a population of 1132 female students of the University of Benin, Ekehuan Campus, A sample of 296 female students was used for the study. Findings showed that majority of female students spend more time on social media which means they are exposed to social media contents and good number of them also follow accounts (influencers and beauty products) that promote diverse beauty standards. A majority of respondents also agreed that social media influence their perception of beauty. The researcher concluded that female students often have the desire to attain beauty in line with the acceptable standard set by social media platforms. Majority of them make changes in their lifestyle based on social media influence. Based on the findings, the researcher recommended that more emphasis should be laid on social media effect on beauty especially among youth as they are the major users of social media. More interest should be laid on body positivity and using social media as a medium for self-acceptance whether beautified or not.
