ABSTRACT

This study explores 'social media and youth mobilization for the 2023 general election in Nigeria: a study of Edo State.' This research sought to examine the manner in which social networking platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, and Instagram impacted youth mobilization in the 2023 general election in Edo State, Nigeria. It also aimed to examine the challenges and limitations faced in engaging and rallying youth through social media. This research utilizes a mixed-methods approach; it involves both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. A questionnaire was used to obtain information from 100 respondents; while three respondents were interviewed. Descriptive analysis was adopted in the examination of the subject of the study. Findings revealed that social media had a significant influence on youth mobilization for the 2023 general election in Edo State. Considering the findings, a proposal was put forth that government should collaborate with social media platforms to enforce regulations. It is vital to curb hate speech, misinformation, and incitement of violence during election periods. Additionally, to develop digital literacy programs addressing the impact of social media on youth mobilization, it is crucial to enhance digital literacy among youths. This objective can be realized by implementing well-structured programs aimed at educating individuals about the responsible utilization of social media platforms, critical thinking, and media literacy skills. By doing so, we can reduce the likelihood of them being manipulated or influenced by misinformation and divisive content.
