ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to evaluate students’ attitude towards investigative journalism as a career, to find out UNIBEN students’ attitude and perception. To find out the variables that influenced the perception they hold. To find out the risks involved in investigative journalism. To determine other areas of interest they may have in mass communication.  This study, was anchored on the tenets of the social category theory. The survey design was used with the aid of a 11 itemed questionnaire. The sample of study was 89 mass communication students of university of Benin. The same was selected using the stratified and simple random technique. Data obtained were analysed with the aid of frequency tables and simple percentages . The findings revealed that the attitude of UNIBEN students towards investigative journalism is mostly negative. Majority of the respondents revealed that investigative journalism is a high risk profession and the risks of the profession is a major influence to the negative attitude they have.  Reforms in media organizations were recommended as ways of dealing with this apathy as majority of the students agreed that it can help with the negative perception towards the profession.
