ABSTRACT

The study examines socio determinants of healthcare in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State. It employed the instrument of questionnaire to elicit information on the subject of socio determinants on healthcare. The research shows that socio determinants on health are important aspect in building a healthy society. The research objectives were geared toward examining the socio-economic characteristics of the respondents; the operational characteristics of the healthcare centres in the study communities; assessment of quality healthcare service delivery and sanitary condition in the study area; identifying health challenges confronting the people; measures to help improve healthcare service delivery; assessment of health insurance scheme operation.

The research shows that the study area has the presence of both government and private healthcare centres across the communities of the study area of which higher proportion of the respondents tends to patronize the government healthcare facility centres. The outcome of the research shows that people tend to have irregular disposition in assessing healthcare centres. The cost of healthcare was rated high by those in the active population age bracket (15-44 years of age). Again, it was observed that most of the healthcare centres located in the respondent’s community tend to operate between 19-24hours. Malaria was acknowledged to be a major health challenge followed by typhoid in the study area. The research shows that respondents operate different health insurance scheme policy ranging from NHIS which has the highest number of persons, to MASARD, Zenith medical care, of which higher proportion of them are live in the urban communities of the study area.

The hypothesis postulated to test socio-economic determinants of respondents on healthcare utilization, based on frequency of visitation to healthcare facilities, using ordinal logistic regression shows that the frequency of healthcare utilization is not gender based. Finally, the research finding posits that moving from non-literate to literate the probability of falling at higher categories of the dependent variable decreases by -0.042. which further shows that literacy has nothing to do the frequency of healthcare visitation (compared to the reference category). Hence, the utilization of healthcare services may not necessarily depend on educational status of individuals, rather it may be psychological or people may see the need to visit healthcare service Centre when they are ill and when they deemed it necessary.
