SUMMARY
This study is intended to critically examine the issues of social and class stratification in he society and the aftermath of materialism and how it affects individuals and their relationship with others. The authors use their books, Great Expectations and Silas Marner, to describe a system of social gaps, inequality and materialism. The works depict a society where members of the society are grouped into social class as a result of their access to economic resources. The study uses the theoretical framework of Marxism in its analysis. The two novels are set around the time of the Industrial Revolution of the nineteenth century, which led to an increasingly noticeable gap between individuals. However, social class issues is still very much prevalent in contemporary society. The study also explores the materialism that exists among the various characters in the novel. It examines the parallel between their want for material things and the situations they experience.
