ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to find out sleep quality and athletic performance among athletes of the university of Benin. Four research questions were raised and four corresponding hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significant. The study adopted correlational research design. The population of this study was made up of 244 athletes from the office of director of sport university of Benin .The sample size was made up of 122 student-athletes and the simple random sampling technique was used to select the respondents. The instrument was validated by three experts all from the University of Benin. The split half method of reliability was used to establish the reliability. Data collected was subjected to Cronbach alpha and a reliability coefficient of 0.788 was obtained. The questionnaire was the instrument used for this study. It was made up of three sections. The data collected from the respondents through the questionnaire forms was analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequency and percentage for their bio-data, while inferential statistics of Pearson and regression statistics was used in testing hypotheses. The findings of this study highlight the significant impact of sleep quality on athletic performance among athletes of University of Benin. The findings suggest that sleep plays a role performance of an athlete. It was recommended that coaches should devote time, in order for athlete to have adequate sleep in terms of sleep quality, latency, efficiency and duration which facilitate better recovery.
