ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to examine the influence of sleep patterns on the mental health of college students. five research questions and two hypotheses were raised and analyzed for the purpose of the study. 

The survey research design was used for this study. The population for this study was 44,140 students in University of Benin 2022/2023 session. A sample of 200 respondents was used for the study. The instrument used for the study was a questionnaire designed by the researcher. The researcher supervisor and two experts from the Department of Health, Safety and Environmental Education, validated the questionnaire. Their corrections and observation helped in the production of the final copy of the instrument. The reliability of the instrument was established using the split-half method and a coefficient of 0.73 was obtained which reflects that the instrument was reliable. The instrument was administered by the researcher and the data collected was subjected to descriptive statistics and the hypotheses were tested using the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient.

The findings of the study are as follows, Poor sleep habits and sleep disturbances are prevalent among the respondents,. The researcher made recommendations of Encouraging students to maintain a consistent sleep schedule, even on weekends, Universities can promote this by structuring academic and extracurricular activities to avoid late-night sessions.
