SIZE VARIATION IN HOPLOBATRACHUS OCCIPITALIS

ABSTRACT

A research work on the size of the Edible frog Hoplobatrachus occipitalis was carried out between June and August 2018 in the University of Benin Ugbowo campus, Edo State, Nigeria. A total of 69 H. occipitalis were collected and measurement of ten morphological body parts were taken in centimeter (cm). The whole sample was grouped into 4 size classes. The least size had snout-vent length ranging from 1.70cm to 3.80cm and its dominant in the population constituting 44.93%, the second group has snout-vent length range of 4.00cm to 6.80cm and represent 11.59%. The third group has range of snout-vent length of 7.10cm to 9.50cm and make up 20.29% of the sample while the last group has snout-vent length of 10.00cm to 12.20cm and is the second largest in the sample with 23.19%. The presence of newly metamorphosed frogs with 1.70cm body size and largest frog of 12.20cm body size indicate reproductive activities in the population and shows H. occipitalis attain reproduction age at body size less than 12.20cm. Changes in length of morphological parts in H. occipitalis is constant, though deviation from the normal pattern of variation were observed in forearm length, inter-orbital distance and snout length as the frogs grew.
