ABSTRACT
Systematic screening for antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 is a crucial tool for surveillance of the COVID-19 pandemic. Coronavirus diseases are infectious diseases caused by a Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2) that appeared in late 2019 to cause a global pandemic in 2020. In this study standard antibodies (IgG and IgM) was employed in the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 of cross sectional students in University of Benin. This cross-sectional study was carried out between February and November 2022 using chemiluminescent assays for antibody detection and a questionnaire. The total number of participant in this research was 591. This study was spread across the different faculties in the institution, with life sciences having the highest percentage participant with 21.3%. The study was also spread across the different ethnicity with Bini and Igbo having the highest participant of 23.3% each. The overall positive seroprevalence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies IgG and IgM was 77.6% and 15.9% respectively in this study with 51.8% showing symptoms of Covid-19 already within the past 7days. There was a significance difference (p-value) of IgG prevalence between male and female with value of 0.961. This study also showed that 91.2% of the participant have not been vaccinated against this virus, the aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence 0f COVID-19 in university students in Nigeria.
