ABSTRACT
The SARS-CoV-2 is a single, positive-strand RNA virus that causes severe respiratory syndrome in humans. The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) emerged as a severe pandemic, claiming more than 0.8 million lives worldwide between December 2019 and August 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic affected various domains of life including education, economy and health in Nigeria. The purpose of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of IgM infection among University of Benin students in the Faculty of Engineering. Using a randomized sampling method, 73 blood and nasopharyngeal swab samples were collected from students. Using standard procedures, blood samples were tested for COVID-19 Antibody infection and nasopharyngeal swab samples were tested for COVID-19 Antigens. From the results gotten from 7 (9.6%) females and 66 (90.4%) males, the 7 females tested negative for IgM and 56 males (88.9%) tested negative as well. The remaining 10 males tested positive for IgM. Overall seroprevalence in the tested Faculty of Engineering samples showed that 10(10/73) students tested positive for COVID-19 IgM antibody (13.69%).
