ABSTRACT
This project work entitled sentential names in Isoko language is motivated by the need to preserve the culture expressed through names. The work focuses on the factors that influence naming, the word order, and meaning and usage of the names. The aim of the work is to enlighten the bearers of the importance and to encourage proper name usage. Data collected was gotten through direct oral interview of native speakers of Isoko. The Theoretical framework used is Traditional Grammar. From the research, it is observed that Isoko names are mostly sentential constructs, they take the word order SVO. Isoko people are named after remarkable events and also have special names for first and last born children. However, some bearers of these names do not appreciate these names and try to make it foreign by abbreviation, which may lead to meaning loss. Isoko names, therefore, expresses the cultural heritage and beliefs of the Isoko people.
