ABSTRACT

This work is based on the semiotics analysis of the items used in new yam Festival in Ohafia. This work is divided into five chapters, the first part which is the first chapter is the introductory part which reveal the geographical location of the investigated language which is located at the Eastern part of Nigeria. Ohafia is an Igbo speaking town in the Ohafia local government. It consist of twenty six (26) villages. This introductory part also talked about the aims and objective of the work, the problem and the purpose of the study. The method of data collection used in the work is the primary method of data collection where data is gotten through interview and also secondary method of data collection where data is gotten from literature of the investigated language. The chapter two of this work reviewed the literature relevant to this work, it also examined previous work and concern of the present study. In chapter three of this work, we looked at the most relevant theory to the topic of discussion. We employed Ferdinand De Saussure's theory of signifier and the signified and also Charles Sander Peirce theory of sign. In the chapter four, collated data were presented and analyzed. Based on the topic of discussion, thirteen items were collated and analyzed to the point of ascertaining meaning. In the last chapter which is chapter five, the work was conclude revealing our findings, summary and conclusion. We found out that all the items used in new yam Festival are significant and we concluded that there Will be increase in the numbers of participation if meaning is revealed. It is also concluded that sign can only be a tool of communication if meaning is deduced.
