ABSTRACT

This research carries out a semiotic analysis of election related cartoon on newspaper. Its aim is to analyze how efficient the use of newspaper cartoon influences the public with its intended message. This will go a long way to offer a semiotic insight to the contributions of political cartoons. The data for the study was sourced and collected from media prints online and newspapers. The qualitative and analytic research designs were adopted for the analysis. In all, twelve cartoons were analyzed using as the major analytical framework of multimodality which was developed by Kress and Leeuwen. This is because the relevance of multimodality accounts for visual elements; colors, body movements and facial expression as well as textual elements and cultural context, as it is evidenced in the data. On the analysis of semiotics, it is evident that multimodality allows for comprehensive analysis of data as a result of its explicit and analytic potential.
