ABSTRACT
The Nigerian Pidgin English (hence NPE), is widely spoken in different parts of the country, it is a contact language that emerged from the fusion of indigenous languages and foreign language (English). The aim of this study is to carry out a semantic interpretation of some selected NPE used on radio stations using Wazobia FM as case study. The contextual and referential theories of meaning were employed to examine data collected. Data were collected from the On Air Personalities (hence OAPs) and also from the audience participants using the Non participatory observation method. The OAPs and audience participants were literates and non-literates, age range from 18 to 65. This study can serve as a relevant literature for other students and researchers with similar research problem. Also it will aid a better understanding and also provide more knowledge on NPE. This study discovers that the meaning of NPE words or Phrases may be achieved depending on what they refer in the world or when used in different context. The paper notes that in as much as the NPE is regarded as an inferior language, it isn’t less of a language because the main aim of any language is to aid communication. NPE is an attempt to change and infuse some words in English in other to aid easy communication. This paper encourage the continuous investigation on NPE, other linguistics field can be used to carry out such investigations.
