ABSTRACT
The main aim of this research is on color expression in the Igbo language; a language spoken in five (Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Enugu and Anambra) states and some parts in Delta and Rivers state of Nigeria. This research adopts a descriptive approach in the analysis of color terminology in Igbo language. It made use of criteria outlined by Berlin and Kay (1969) in arriving at ‘two –term basic color system in the language. This research observed two basic color terms which are ‘ocha’, oji/nji (white and black) and other non-basic color terms in the language.
It is observed that the non-basic color terms are expressed by referring to objects having the same color as the intended color. It is also observed that color terms can be used as copular verbs to express the colors observed in the language. The copular verbs chaga/acha (white), ji (black) and agba (colour) complement the intended colors. It is assuring that this research will provide a guide to the way and manner in which people view the world around.
