ABSTRACT

The concept of Eulogy is one that has deep root in the linguistics of African languages, the Yoruba language is an African language which have eulogy embedded in them, this concept is that which plays a great role in the society. In the Yoruba linguistics society the eulogy is referred to as Oriki, the Oriki is used for different function, it is used for praise, lamentation etc. This study is an ethnographic study of Eulogy in Yoruba language, the study collected its data from native speaker using oral interview, the qualitative research design was employed. Work of related scholar were reviewed, data were presented and grouped base on eulogy for father, for mother, for king, for warrior and for twin. The data was analyzed using Hymes (1964) ethnography of communication theory, the speaking model was used in the analysis, after effective analysis, the following were observed; the Yoruba language has eulogy as linguistics properties, the ethnography of communication proved successful in the analysis of eulogy in Yoruba, bringing out each of the contextual usage.
