ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was to give a proper documentation of the language used in Ero festival in Ipele community. It objectives were to document the language used in Ero festival in Ipele community, the meaning of the expression used during the festival, the implications if the language used in Ero festival is used in a wrong context and the role the participants play when using this expression. The study rely on the data collected from the native speakers of Ipele community in Ondo state. The data were organized and broken down into 23 basic functional items. The Ethnography of communication, which was propounded by Hymes (1972) was adopted for this study. The analysis of the data revealed that the Ipele community uses this festival for age grade celebration. The study concludes that Ero festival in Ipele community is very vital amongst the people and it is a living embodiment of their beliefs and values.
