Abstract
the study entailed a descriptive analysis of the semantic nature of the Edo verb. The aim of the study was to examine whether the Edo verbs selection/insertion is based the semantic properties of the arguments alone, or the context of the event process. The framework for analysis is the basic linguistic theory (Dixon 1997). The basic linguistic theory is a descriptive theoretical framework that employs much of traditional grammar’s terminologies and borrows from explanatory theoretical frameworks like TGG based on the research needs of the researcher. The basic linguistic theory was employed to document and describe the data employed in this study. The data relied on for this study was gotten from speakers of the Edo language as well as published and unpublished materials on Edo verbs. The bulk of data collected were verified and the verb forms representing the same concept in the language were selected for further descriptive analysis. The results of the analysis suggested that the some verbs possessed some shared basic grammatical and semantic properties that accounted for their selectional restrictions. Furthermore, it was revealed that the subject of the basic clause, in cases where the verb form is intransitive, and the object, especially of the transitive verb form, determined the verb form which would be selected to encode the event process.
