ABSTRACT
This work is a study of verbs of buying in Igbo language, particularly the Orlu dialect of Igbo. The members have inherent properties that encode different shades of meaning in their syntactic construction. It has been observed that Igbo verbs obligatorily occur with a nominal element which can be used to define the semantic class of those verbs. The theoretical framework used in this work is Lexical semantics. Its specific objectives were to examine the relationship of inclusion and exclusion within a semantic field of the verbs of buying in Igbo. It was concluded that Igbo verbs of buying are rich in hyponymy and that they exhibit strict selectional restrictions in their co-occurring elements. The data for research was collected through direct interview as well as participant observation. Igbo speaker's knowledge of buying verbs involves the meaning of the verb in relation to its co-occurring bought items or element.
