SCREENING TO DETERMINE THE BEST DEGRABLE BACTERIA ISOLATES ON FRESH EMULSION OUTDOOR PAINT USING SHAKE FLASK METHOD

ABSTRACT

Paints for outdoor application is commonly used both to preserve and enhance surfaces that are exposed to the environment such as buildings and other structures. With time, weathering can occur resulting in paints deterioration, resulting in the accumulation of paint chips and dust that can contaminate water and soil sources. The optical density was determined using spectrophotometer with the wavelength of 660nm. The research is tailored to assess the most degradable bacterial isolates from deteriorated paint scrapings using shake flask method. The result of the screening revealed that Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus had the highest optical density of 2.62893 and 2.43179 The result of total viable heterotrophic counts after three days of degradation ranged from 2.0*106 cfu/ml to 6.0*106 cfu/ml with the highest counts seen in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and while the least was seen in E.coli. Based on the above research, the paint producers are advised to include biocides into the paint during production as the microbial association may cause environmental hazards especially disease to human when found in the food chain.
