ABSTRACT
This research work sought to examine rural poverty and taxpaying compliance in Nigeria; a case study of Egor local government area of Edo state. The study made use of questionnaire to obtain data from respondent. Four objectives were raised for the study. The study found that poor performance, lack of dedication and commitment of workers in public sector is a result of lack of motivation or incentives. It also found that low productivity of workers in University of Benin was as a result of inadequate salaries/wages, low level of fringe benefits and absence of collective bargaining process in the institution. The study concluded that the payment of good salaries and wages is fundamental to the increase in the productivity of employee. Therefore a suitable payment system is a prerequisite for effective performance and thus recommended that periodic upward review of worker’s wages/salaries and other fringe benefits through collective bargaining process should be consistent.
