ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to examine rural development as a means of combating rural-urban migration using Egor Local Government Area of Edo state as a case study. This study was specifically carried out to examine the extent of rural development as a means of combating rural-urban migration in Egor Local Government Area of Edo state, find out the factors responsible for rural- urban migration and ascertain its implication on the rural area itself and urban areas. The survey research design was adopted and the convenience sampling method were employed in this study. The population size comprised of occupant of Egor Local Government Area, Edo state. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected respondents. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire were analyzed using simple percentages and presented in tables. The result of the findings revealed that there is a need for rural development in Egor Local Government. The study also revealed that people migrate from rural areas to the urban areas due to lack of basic services such as education, health care, clean water, and sanitation. Therefore, the study recommended that the government should prevent the migration of rural dwellers to the urban areas by making available amenities such as educational facilities, health care facilities, clean water and sanitation that would encourage the stay of migrants. The study also recommended that the local authorities should be empowered to take ownership of their development initiatives, promote a sense of pride and attachment to their rural areas.
