ROLE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN PROMOTING ETHNIC AND RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE

ABSTRACT

In an era defined by digital interconnectedness, this study explores the pivotal role of social media platforms in fostering ethnic and religious tolerance within the cultural landscape of Benin City, Nigeria. With a focus on harnessing technology for societal cohesion, the research examines how individuals from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds employ social media for communication and information sharing. Through a descriptive survey design, data is gathered to gauge the current attitudes of Benin City residents towards ethnic and religious diversity and assess how these attitudes influence their interactions on social media. The findings underscore the transformative potential of social media platforms. They reveal a rich engagement among individuals from various age groups, ethnicities, and religious affiliations. The data demonstrates a pronounced willingness to engage with content that promotes understanding and unity, showcasing the positive attitudes held by respondents. Moreover, the study delves into the strategies and interventions that can amplify the effectiveness of social media in promoting peaceful coexistence among diverse ethno-religious groups. The study underscores the significance of tailored content strategies for different social media platforms, capitalizing on their distinct features to amplify messages of tolerance. Collaborative initiatives, digital literacy programs, and awareness campaigns are identified as key drivers of change. The results are reflective of a growing digital landscape where attitudes and interactions converge to foster a culture of tolerance and understanding. This research contributes to the ongoing discourse on the potential of technology to bridge cultural divides and underscores the importance of harnessing digital spaces as catalysts for positive social change.
