ABSTRACT
Entrepreneurial competency is crucial to the success of every organization in competitive and fast shifting business environments. The study examined the competencies of owners/managers of emerging small scale businesses in Benin City. A cross sectional research design was adopted for this study. The study population comprised small and medium enterprise within Ugbowo community in Ovia north East Local Government area, Benin City, Edo State Nigeria. The population includes owners/managers of small and medium enterprises in Benin. Questionnaire was used for data collection, and was analyzed using mean and standard deviation, and was tested using chi-square. the sample size consisted of 100 participants obtained through a purposive sampling techniques, the major findings revealed that there is no significant effect of entrepreneurial competencies on business success in Benin City, Edo State also there is significant relationship between factor in the development of entrepreneurial competence, lastly there is a significant relationship between entrepreneurial competence in business success. It was concluded that entrepreneurs in their knowledge and perception exploit opportunities and acquisition of resources in running business. This study recommend that the government and concern agencies should be devoted to allocating resources for training and education to ensure that strategic competency is acquired by entrepreneurs to enhance smart decision-making, foster planning and help solve problems through developed skills, knowledge and abilities for the actualization of enterprise goals.
