ROLE OF GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING IN PREVENTING PROSTITUTION AMONG STUDENTS OF UNIVERSITY OF BENIN, BENIN CITY

ABSTRACT

The study investigated the role of guidance and counselling in preventing prostitution among students of University of Benin, Benin City. To achieve the purpose of the study, three research questions were raised and answered. The population for this study was made up of all the 300 and 400 level undergraduate students in the Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin City, 2023 Academic Session. The sample size for the study was made up of 100 undergraduate students which were randomly selected from 300 and 400 level in the Faculty of Education, University of Benin. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The instrument for data collection is a self-designed questionnaire titled “Role of Guidance and Counselling in Preventing Prostitution Questionnaire (RGCPPQ)”. Data collected from the respondents was analyzed using descriptive statistics, precisely mean and standard deviation. The findings from the study include that there is low prevalence of prostitution among students in University of Benin, Benin City. It was concluded that guidance and counselling plays a significant role in preventing prostitution among students in University of Benin, Benin City. The study recommended among others that the University of Benin school management should develop and implement comprehensive guidance and counselling programmes specifically tailored to address the underlying factors that contribute to prostitution among students.
