ABSTRACT
The study examines the role of cartoon journalism in the 2023 general elections in Nigeria via the study of four selected Nigerian newspaper. Three objectives and research questions guided the study. The study adopted quantitative research design. The population for this study comprises of 356 newspaper editions selected from four national newspapers which are the Punch, The Guardian, Vanguard and The Sun). The sample size for the study was 100 political cartoons published during general election period which was drawn using simple random purposive sampling techniques. Findings of the study revealed that cartoons were frequently used for political commentary, with varying editorial stances reflecting each newspaper's biases. It also revealed that thematic content and visual rhetoric were critical in conveying complex political messages, often metaphors, caricature, irony, and symbolic imagery to engage the audience and influence public opinion. The study concluded that cartoon journalism played a significant role in the 2023 general elections in Nigeria. Editorial cartoons were extensively used as mediums for political critique and social commentary, influencing voters’ behavior and shaping public opinion on key issues. The study recommended that Media houses should continue to support and promote cartoon journalism, providing training and resources for cartoonists to enhance their skills.
